1. SCHEDULE FOR COMMON NIGHT TESTS
Regularly scheduled evening classes have precedence over specially scheduled
common night tests. Departments giving common night tests are responsible
for providing makeup opportunities for students who have conflicts with their
regularly scheduled classes and other officially-scheduled University activities.
The Department of Registration and Records will announce the schedule for common night
tests in the Schedule of Courses for the following semester, and instructors
in courses having common night tests should announce the schedule for these
tests during the first week of the semester, so that students will be aware
of potential conflicts and will have an opportunity to adjust their schedules
if they do desire.
2. NO MAJOR TESTS IN FINAL WEEK OF CLASSES
Lab tests and semester project reports and presentations are permissible
during the final week of classes. Papers and homework may have a due date
during the final week of classes only if scheduled in the syllabus. However,
in order for students to prepare for final examinations, faculty members
may not assign other tests, quizzes or additional papers during the final
week of classes. Assignments should not have a due date during the final
exam period unless the assignment constitutes a part of the final exam. Exceptions
to this policy must be approved in advance by the department head and the
dean of the college involved. Students should contact the appropriate instructor
or department head if they believe an assignment is not in compliance with
this regulation.
3. FINAL EXAMINATION POLICY
Except for research, seminar, tutorial, or studio courses, final examinations
should be given in all courses. Exemptions may be granted by the faculty member
responsible for a particular course or section provided prior approval is
obtained from the department head. Exemptions may be applied to whole courses,
sections, groups of students, or individual students, provided that these
exemptions are applied equitably to the students in a particular course or
section and comparable procedures are applied to all sections of multiple-sectioned
courses.
4. FINAL EXAMINATION SCHEDULE
An exam schedule showing the date and hours of examination for each class
meeting time is published each semester in the Schedule of Courses
and is announced again in the Bulletin shortly after midsemester. Each examination period lasts three hours. Examinations
will be held ONLY between the hours indicated. Exceptions must be approved
by the dean of the college in which the course is taught.
5. THREE FINAL EXAMINATIONS IN 24 HOURS
No student shall be required to take three consecutively scheduled final
examinations within any 24-hour period. If students find that they have three
consecutively scheduled exams, they should report to the Department of Registration and Records (1000 Harris Hall) before the exams are to
be given, have their schedules verified, and to obtain a form approving their
request to change the date of a specific examination as designated
by the student. They will take the form to the specified instructor
or departmental office and arrange for a new examination date. The instructor
will enter the new date on the form and sign it. The instructor and the student
should both retain a copy. The student shall be responsible for returning
the form to the Department of Registration and Records, 1000 Harris Hall.
6. FINAL EXAM REVIEW POLICY
Final exam papers may be returned to students at the discretion of the instructor,
except where departmental policy provides otherwise. If the final exam papers
are not returned to the students, the instructor shall keep the unreturned
papers at least until midsemester of the next regular semester beyond the
date at which the exam was given, regardless of whether or not the students
is enrolled during that semester. During this period any student shall have
an opportunity to review the exam paper at a time convenient to both the instructor
and the student. In cases where the instructor will not be on campus during
the next regular semester, the department should make reasonable efforts to
insure that the final exam papers for the instructor will be held in the departmental
office for review by the student in accordance with procedures established
by the department. The fact that in some instances it may be impossible to
provide a student with the opportunity to review the final exam papers is
not sufficient to justify a reexamination.
7. REEXAMINATION FOR SENIORS
A reexamination in one course may be granted to a senior under the following
conditions:
7.1. that all other degree requirements have been met and the satisfactory
completion of that course would make the student eligible for graduation;
7.2. that the course for which the reexamination is requested has been taken
not more than twelve months before the intended date of graduation;
7.3. that the office of the dean of the college in which the student is enrolled
certifies that the above conditions have been met; and
7.4. that the department offering the course for which the reexamination is
requested approves the request.
The reexamination must be based on the total subject matter of the course
and must be taken not later than one month after the date of the intended
graduation. The only grades which can be given on a reexamination are C (+/-),
D (+/-), or F. If the grade received on the reexamination is higher than the
original grade on the course, the higher grade will replace the original grade,
which will affect the cumulative grade point average. The student may not
take a second reexamination under the policy.
Applications for reexamination can be obtained in the office of the dean
of each college. The completed application with the new grade indicated must
be delivered to the Department of Registration and Records by the instructor and will be used to change
the grade on the student's academic record.
