1. Joint Faculty Appointments
1.1 In a joint appointment, portions of the faculty member's salary must come from more than one department. Voting privileges on departmental matters are to be settled by the department heads involved. The program of the individual shall be important and appropriate to the departments. Generally, not more than two departments should be involved; however, where circumstances justify, it will be permissible to be joint with two or more. Departments will jointly recommend promotions and salary adjustments, with one designated as having primary responsibility for the process.
2. Associate Faculty Appointments
2.1 Faculty members who receive all of their salary from one department are eligible only for associate status in another department. An individual with "associate" standing in a department has no voting privileges on tenure or promotion in the associate department. Appointment to associate status should be made only when it is desired by the faculty member, his or her parent department, and the department in which he or she is to become an associate member. Associate status should be awarded only when documentation of a standing relationship further supports the goals of the university, college or departments. In most cases, collegial relationships will develop across colleges and departments that do not require such a formal arrangement.
2.2 Associate appointments may be terminated by the associate department upon request of the faculty member to both department heads, or initiated by the department head and with a vote for termination by the Departmental Voting Faculty of the associate department. When associate faculty status is terminated, it does not affect the faculty member's primary appointment as a regular or special faculty member.
