Appointments are made at the academic ranks of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. The university shall seek to appoint and retain as members of the faculty those individuals having the highest qualifications. The following are the minimum required qualifications of an individual for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to the various academic ranks.  College and Departmental Standards for reappointment as Assistant Professor, promotion to Associate Professor with tenure and promotion to Professor are documented in college and departmental RPT rules.

1. Instructor

1.1. Ability or potential in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

1.2. A master's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

2. Assistant Professor 

2.1. Ability or definite promise in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

2.2. Potential for directing activities in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

2.3. Ability and willingness to participate in department, college and university affairs.

2.4. A doctor's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience. 

 3. Associate Professor

3.1. Recognized ability and potential for distinction in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

3.2. Demonstrated ability to direct activities in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

3.3. Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in department, college and university affairs.

3.4. A doctor's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

4. Professor

4.1. Distinguished achievement in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

4.2. Demonstrated ability to direct activities in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.

4.3. Established reputation in the individual's profession or field of scholarly or germane creative activity.

4.4. Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in department, college and university affairs.

4.5. A doctor's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
