Authority: Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
History:
First Issued:
Fall 2002 Archived Version (Effective Fall 2002 through June 2, 2008)
Revisions:
June 3, 2008 Current Version - This change in regulation creates two new mechanisms for initiating a tenure clock extension in addition to the existing mechanism: (1) parents with a new child in the household (born, adopted, or foster) under the revised regulation are able to request tenure clock extension by submitting a simplified “Notification of a Birth, Adoption, or Placement of a Foster Child” to their department head, with automatic approval, and (2) faculty who take Family Medical Leave (FMLA) for 60 days or longer are automatically granted tenure clock extension. The current mechanism, submission of a “Request for Tenure Clock Extension” form to the Office of the Provost, remains available for all other cases. In addition, the revised regulation specifies that whenever a tenure clock extension has been granted, the faculty member may opt to be reviewed for tenure in the mandatory year or in the year prior; the standards for tenure are the same in either case.
The intent of this regulation change is to encourage faculty to make use of the option to extend the tenure clock and to encourage department heads and departmental voting faculty to view extension of the tenure clock for a new child in the family as the standard professional practice, rather than as an exception. In the past, tenure clock extension was almost always approved for a new child in the family, but it was not often requested. More regular use of tenure clock extension will improve the compatibility of faculty life with family life. This revision of the regulation makes tenure clock extension very easy to request and completely automatic in some situations, and it clarifies the tenure review standards for cases in which an extension has been granted.
