- Regulation
Performance of all teaching faculty shall
be evaluated for teaching effectiveness. Measures of effective performance
shall include data obtained from anonymous student evaluation instruments
according to the university's procedures for obtaining and handling student
evaluations of teaching effectiveness. Student evaluations shall be collected
each semester a class is taught. For new and nontenured faculty and for
graduate teaching assistants, direct observation of classroom teaching
shall be part of an annual peer review process. Peer review of tenured
faculty shall take place at least every five years for professors and at
least every three years for others. Other measures of teaching effectiveness
shall also be included in the evaluation process, e.g., portfolios of course
syllabi and materials for instruction, student exit interviews, alumni
surveys, and annual employee performance reviews.
Each department shall develop or adopt
a student evaluation[1] instrument appropriate to the
types of courses offered by that department which includes the university
common set of questions as provided by the provost. Development of a peer
review process and of other measures of evaluation will be the responsibility
of individual departments. Copies of evaluation instruments and other performance
measures shall be sent to the provost and vice chancellor and the appropriate
college dean for approvals.
The purposes of this teaching evaluation
process are two-fold. First and foremost the information gathered will
provide appropriate and timely feedback to the individual faculty member
for the purpose of promoting excellence in teaching and to encourage instructors
to seek out additional resources to enhance teaching performance. Second,
teaching evaluation data obtained according to university policy will assist
administrators and senior faculty in assessing teaching effectiveness which
serves as an important criterion in decisions made regarding tenure, promotion,
and merit salary increases.
