- For the purposes of maternity (which includes pregnancy, miscarriage, and
other pregnancy related complications, childbirth and recovery), employees
whose benefits include sick and annual leave may use that leave for maternity
related absences.
- Nine-month faculty, whose benefits do not include sick or annual leave,
may make alternative arrangements with their department heads for ensuring
that their responsibilities are covered during their absence. New mothers
are entitled to a period of leave that will be no less than six weeks following
normal delivery and eight weeks following caesarian delivery, which are the
standards adopted by the American College of Obstetricians. This period may
be longer if the faculty member's responsibilities can be fulfilled in an
alternative manner or reallocated appropriately.
2.1 Typical arrangements include:
2.1.1 Hiring an adjunct faculty member to cover her teaching responsibilities
for the semester or for the weeks of her absence.
2.1.2 Reallocating teaching responsibilities among other faculty.
2.1.3 Reallocating responsibilities among the faculty so that the new mother
can work on special projects at home or can teach at hours when the father
can care for the child.
