As an agency of the state of North Carolina, NC State University is required to follow various federal and state laws and regulations, as well as policies and regulations of the University of North Carolina.

1. Introduction

Leave without pay may be granted to a permanent or probationary full- or part-time employee for various reasons, including family medical leave, extended educational purposes, vacation, worker's compensation, or personal reasons.

The decision to grant leave without pay is made by the supervisor. Factors in deciding whether to approve a written request include the employee's needs, workload, need to fill the employees' job, chances of the employee returning to work, and the university's obligation to reinstate the employee.

Permanent or probationary full-or part-time employees are covered.
