1. Selection of Associate and Assistant Academic Officials

Recognizing that the selection of associate and assistant academic officers is primarily the responsibility of the provost and executive vice chancellor (hereafter referred to as provost), the dean, or the department head/chair/chair, it is believed that the advice of the faculty is an important step in the process of such appointments. The chancellor has requested that the manner in which this advice is given should be regularized in accordance with the following guidelines:

2. Associate and Assistant Department Heads/Chairs or the Equivalent

The department head/chair should present his or her candidate(s) to the Departmental Voting Faculty of the department and seek their advice and counsel. Specific procedures for this purpose should be developed by each department, subject to the approval of the college dean. Each department head/chair should seek the advice and counsel of the faculty or representative faculty members in the department in the formulation of procedures, and should assure that all faculty who may be affected by such appointments be informed of the approved procedures prior to their implementation.

3. Associate and Assistant Deans and Associate and Assistant Directors

The dean should present his or her candidate or slate of candidates to a representative committee of the faculty and seek the advice and counsel of the committee. Specific procedures for this purpose should be developed by each college, subject to the approval of the provost. Each dean should seek the advice and counsel of the faculty or representative faculty members in the college in the formulation of procedures, and should assure that all faculty who may be affected by such appointments are informed of the approved procedures prior to their implementation .

4. Vice Provosts

The provost shall include the Chair of the Faculty as a member of the group which reviews candidates for positions of vice provost. The advice of the Faculty Senate will be obtained through the Chair of the Faculty.

5. Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors Involved in Academic Programs

The provost shall include the Chair of the Faculty as a member of the group which reviews candidates for positions of associate or assistant vice chancellors involved in academic programs (instruction, research, and extension). The advice of the Faculty Senate will be obtained through the Chair of the Faculty.
