Policy for Travel Time

As an agency of the state of North Carolina, NC State University is required to follow various federal and state laws and regulations, as well as policies and regulations of the University of North Carolina.

  1. Purpose
  2. Certain instances of travel time are compensable.

  3. Covered Employees
  4. All SPA and EPA employees are covered.

    1. Compensable Travel Time


      1. Site to Site Travel during the Workday
      2. Travel from one job to another during the workday is counted as work time. Travel from an outlying job site at the end of the day to the normal work site is work time.

      3. Out of Town Travel during the Workday
      4. Travel out of town during the workday is counted as work time except for the period of time that normally would be considered as home to work travel time and meals periods.

      5. Travel Overnight
      6. Travel out of town overnight is counted as work time only for those hours which fall within an employee's regularly scheduled shift. This applies to non-workdays as well as regularly scheduled workdays.

    2. Non-compensable Travel Time


      1. Home to Work
      2. Travel from home to work is not considered work time even if the employee must report to work at a fixed location or at various job sites.
