July 14, 2003 - This policy codifies in writing the procedures that
will be followed by the Board of Trustees and the Student and Campus Affairs
Committee when a student files an appeal from decisions of the Provost and
Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs or designee in academic disciplinary
cases, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs or designee in the case of
non-academic disciplinary cases, or the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs in non-disciplinary grievances. (Procedures for handling
faculty and other EPA employee grievance appeals by the Academic Affairs and
Personnel Committee have already been codified as BOT 01.05.8.) This proposed
codification for the handling of student appeals will provide official written
notice of the BOT level appeal process for students who are appealing to the
Board of Trustees. It authorizes the Chair of the Student and Campus Affairs
Committee to act for the Committee to dismiss an appeal that is not properly
filed. It also delegates to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs and the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel certain responsibilities
for administering the process at the Board of Trustees level in accordance
with current practice.
