1. Introduction

When you check into your residence hall or apartment area, you will receive keys that will allow you appropriate access to your building, mailbox, apartment (if applicable), and room. All exterior entrances are kept locked for security purposes. Depending on your residential community, entry is gained using a key or key fob. For your own security, be sure to lock your door(s) whenever you leave your room/apartment and carry your keys and fob (if applicable) at all times. Your room/apartment key(s) and fob are for your personal use only. Unauthorized duplicating, lending or borrowing room or building keys and fob is prohibited.

2. Common Areas and Keyless Entry

Berry, Becton and Bagwell residence halls and Wolf Village apartments have a keyless entry system on all exterior doors, elevator lobby doors, and interior hallway doors. Residents are issued a key fob that permits access to all three residence halls and all 8 apartment buildings, respectively. Syme, Gold and Welch residence halls have a common area key. The common area key allows students to share hall facilities. Even though the key fobs and common area keys give residents access to use these facilities, students still need to abide by the visitation policy.

3. Lost Keys and Key Fobs

If you lose your key or key fob, you are required to obtain a temporary replacement key and/or fob immediately from your 24-Hour Service Desk. If you cannot produce the key or key fob issued to you upon check-in within 24-hours, your room will be recorded and your student account will be charged accordingly. If the temporary key or fob is not returned, your lock will be changed and your key fob deactivated for security reasons, and you will be billed through the University Cashier's Office. Whenever a lock is changed, Facilities Operations' Lock Shop employees will leave a notice on the appropriate door. New keys and/or key fob can then be obtained at your 24-Hour Service Desk.

4. Lockouts

If you are locked out of your room or leave your key or key fob at home, you may obtain a temporary key or fob from your 24-Hour Service Desk. If the key / fob is not returned in the specified time, your lock will be changed, your key fob deactivated and you will be billed through the University Cashier's Office. Keys or key fobs issued for lockouts must be returned to the 24-Hour Service Desk within 24 hours to avoid a lock change and charges. If the desk is closed, contact the RA on duty for your building or area. The appropriate staff member will then be contacted to assist you with access to your room. Abuse of this service may result in disciplinary action.

5. Hall/Apartment Access

Residence hall and apartment building entrance doors are locked 24 hours a day. This action is an important crime prevention effort and we ask for your support. Remember to carry your keys and key fobs at all times! If you discover that an entrance door is propped open, shut it or seek assistance from a staff member. Never open an entrance door for someone else. Residents of the hall or apartment community can open the door with their keys or key fob and legitimate guests should be escorted into the building by their host. Courtesy phones are located on the exterior of most halls and in Wolf Village apartments so that guests can easily contact residents, arrange for access and be escorted when they come to visit. Hall staff will discuss other safety strategies with you. We encourage all students to become actively involved in Community Watch and other crime prevention programs.
