1. Appliances/Cooking

Due to fire and safety standards, only microwaves which use less than 1800 watts, automatic coffee makers, popcorn poppers and toaster ovens may be used in residents' rooms. Refrigerators which do not exceed 4 cubic feet are also permitted. Food must always be attended to while cooking in order to prevent fire. See the Residence Hall Agreement (Section VIII) for more specific details.

2. Halogen Lamps

Recent national studies have shown that torchiere style halogen lamps present significant risk of starting fires. As a result, these lamps are not permitted in residence hall rooms.

3. Holiday Decorations

Decorations using electrical cords should not be used on room doors. Decorations should not cover more than 75% of the wall space in hallways and spray paint or aerosol may not be used inside the building. Only mini-lights labeled by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) are permitted for use in room decorations. All lights must be unplugged when residents retire for the evening or leave their rooms. Exterior lighting is not permitted.

4. Room Decorating

All carpet, furniture and other miscellaneous personal items used in the residence hall should be fire retardant. Candles are not permitted in student rooms. Wood paneling, particle board, room partitions, space heaters and decorations (such as parachutes, fish nets, ceiling fans and an excessive number of posters) are not allowed. Power strips with built in circuit breakers are permitted if needed. No furniture or decorations should inhibit entry or exit in any manner. Room furnishings may only be used in ways appropriate to their construction.

5. Street Signs

Removal of signs from University property and city, county, or state property poses a potential safety hazard for citizens. Possessing these signs constitutes theft. Residence hall staff who see these signs in your room will either ask you to take your signs to the Department of Transportation and/or will notify the Department of Public Safety that you possess these signs. You will have 24 hours to return the signs to the Department of Transportation, usually with no penalty. Failure to return the signs will result in the issue of a Campus Appearance Ticket and judicial procedures.

6. Wood Structures

Students may want to build wooden structures to create more space in their rooms. Before building, complete the Permit for Wooden Structure. The structure must be painted with a fire-retardant substance and will be inspected to make sure it meets safety standards. Guidelines are outlined in the "Wooden Structure Policy" available at your 24-Hour Service Desk office. Students should read the policy before building their wooden structure and follow the policy carefully during construction and assembly. Failure to adhere to policy guidelines will result in your wooden structure being taken down. For more information contact your RA, RD or RLC.
