1. Regulation:

University physicians, extenders, and Counseling Center staff cannot provide faculty medical excuses or information on a student without the student's written authorization.

2. Procedure:

2.1 University regulation states that university physicians and physician extenders do not provide written excuses for class absences. Because of student confidentiality, information can only be released directly by the Counseling Center or Student Health Services in case of crisis or with the student's written authorization.

2.2. It has been demonstrated in many university settings that when a health service is regularly involved in medical excuses, an inordinate amount of professional time is consumed by that process. The provision of quality medical care is not compatible with an excuse-providing function, a view that is shared by the American College Health Association.

2.3 Should university officials need to know about a student visit to Counseling or Student Health Services, information can only be released at the student's written request or in cases of crisis. Students may obtain a records release form at Student Health Services Medical Records or 919-515-2563.
