A Contracorriente, a peer reviewed online journal, welcomes essays about the intersection between literature and social history in Latin America. As the title of the journal implies, its aim is to go against the current of poststructuralist and postmodernist theories by returning to the socio-historical analysis of culture. We hope to foster debate and discussion within this tradition and we encourage polemical essays, specific studies of concrete cultural, historical and literary contexts, and critiques of the relativist trends in literary criticism and historiography. We do not accept articles published elsewhere. Our selection of articles depends on the quality, breadth and originality of the theme(s) covered and their bearing on the focus of the journal.

We publish essays (15,000 word maximum), debate pieces (6,000 word maximum), interviews (not exceeding 5,000 words) and review-essays (not more than 4000 words) in English or Spanish. As a refereed journal, A Contracorriente expects all submissions to comply with the standards associated with academic journals in the humanities. Each article is read by both chief editors and sent out to at least one member of the Editorial Board, who receives the piece as a blind submission. We inform authors of the results of our evaluation within two or three months. We do not accept articles being considered at other journals simultaneously.

Submissions should follow the MLA or Chicago style manuals and should be sent as a Microsoft Word attachment to the editors. The document should be paginated consecutively (on one side), double-spaced in the text and single-spaced in the footnotes, with 1 inch margins top and bottom and 1.25 inch margins on the sides, and in 12 point Times font. Place footnotes, not endnotes, in the text and append a works cited page to the written text. E-mail submissions to: Greg Dawes (gadfll@unity.ncsu.edu).
