Mission 1 - Astronomer

What Does an Astronomer Do?

Astronomers use physics and mathematics to learn more about the Sun, planets, Moon, and stars. Often times they analyze data sent back from satellites and write scientific reports about it. Some Astronomers work to develop theories about space and its mysteries. Other Astronomers operate high-powered telescopes to gather information and data from deep space. Astronomers can work in museum planetariums and develop programs to present to the public about space, the stars, and planets. Astronomers can also teach in universities.

How Do I Become an Astronomer?

Most Astronomers will need to get a Ph.D. because astronomy is based in research. Astronomy requires knowing a lot about math and physics. Someone who wanted to become an Astronomer should also be very curious, have good writing skills, and be good at problem-solving. Astronomy is a relatively small field, and there are only about 6,000 Astronomers in North America.

Mission 2 - Soil Scientist

What Does a Soil Scientist Do?

A Soil Scientist makes sure that the soil is just right for maximum crop production. Soil Scientists study soil, fertilizer technology, and plants to determine how to solve crop problems for farmers. Some Soil Scientists perform research to develop new types of fertilizers. Others plan farming systems for undeveloped areas and study soil conservation. Soil Scientists can work in laboratories, in universities, or outdoors as farm consultants or land developers. There are many job titles that a Soil Scientist can hold, including titles such as, "Land-Use Manager," "Environmental Consultant," "Soil Conservationist," or "Agriculture Chemical Consultant."

How Do I Become a Soil Scientist?

A student interested in this career should enjoy biology, ecology, math, chemistry, and physics. Some of the classes a student studying Soil Science will take include topics such as soil classification, food production, and waste management. Soil Scientists are in demand in many different areas because of an increase in concern for the environment.

What Does a Botanist Do?

Botanists are scientists who study plants. They do research on plant parts, the uses of plants, and the environment of plants. Botanists can do many things, including finding and classifying new plants, studying plant diseases, developing new types of plants, and studying the areas in which plants grow. Botanists can work in laboratories or universities, and often times they travel to the places where the plants grow so they can study them in the wild.

How Do I Become a Botanist?

Botanists must be very interested in plants. They have to enjoy research work and have good eyesight.

Lunar Geologist

What Does a Lunar Geologist Do?

Lunar Geologists study the structure of the Moon, the rocks that make up the Moon’s surface, and the materials that make up the inside of the Moon. Lunar geologists design experiments for astronauts or satellite rovers to perform after they land on the Moon. They also make decisions about interesting and safe places for vehicles to land on the Moon. Astrogeologists study all rocks in space, including the Moon.

How Do I Become a Lunar Geologist?

A student interested in lunar geology should enjoy physical sciences and be interested in rocks. Students will study chemistry, physics, engineering, and math. The field of Lunar Geology is relatively small. Lunar geologists work at NASA, at universities, and for companies interested in space exploration.

Mission 4 - Astronaut

What Does an Astronaut Do?

Currently, many Astronauts are involved with the International Space Station, an orbiting laboratory high above Earth. They perform experiments in space and live in very close quarters for several months. There are many different jobs that Astronauts can do. They can be Flight Engineers and fly the shuttle and navigate the space station. They can also be Astronaut Researchers. These people conduct experiments in space, perform spacewalks, and help maintain the computer systems on the space station. They perform research on plants, animals, and microorganisms.

How Do I Become an Astronaut?

Every two years NASA selects about 100 people to take part in an intensive Astronaut candidate training program. It is very competitive, and thousands of people apply. It is important that students who are interested in becoming Astronauts prepare themselves early. Students should take courses in math and sciences and read books about space. Since space exploration is an international effort, a person can get ahead by knowing foreign languages and understanding different cultures.

Mission 5 - Architect and Space Biologist

Architect

What Does an Architect Do?

Architects are trained in the art and science of designing buildings. They make building images and plans for buildings that can be constructed by others. Architects provide professional services to those who want to build a building, and they may be involved in all stages of planning the project. Architects design a wide variety of buildings, including houses, office buildings, churches, hospitals, factories, and schools. Architects mostly work in an office environment developing plans and meeting with clients.

How Do I Become an Architect?

Usually, people become architects by completing a five-year undergraduate program in Architecture, although some people get a graduate degree. Courses that students in these programs take include classes in building structure, architectural history, design, and math. People pursuing a career as an Architect should be creative, logical thinkers who can pay attention to small details.

Space Biologist

What Does a Space Biologist Do?

Space Biologists study how living things like plants, animals, humans, and microorganisms behave and change when in the space environment. The space environment is quite different from the Earth environment. For starters, there is much less gravity in space than on Earth. The atmosphere and living environment is very different as well. Space biologists perform experiments to study how living things act in space so that we can make good decisions about space exploration and colonization in the future.

How Do I Become a Space Biologist?

A student interested in this career should enjoy all sciences, particularly biology. The student should be interested in space and the effects of gravity and environments on living things. Also, it is important to be curious and good at problem solving. Space Biology is a relatively small field. Space biologists work at NASA, at universities, and for companies interested in space exploration.
