NCSU International Collaborative Agriculture Uruguay

• In 2006, an interdisciplinary team from the NC State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences received an International Science and Education grant from USDA-CSREES to create new programs focused on organic production and marketing. The project builds on an existing relationship between the University of North Carolina system and the nation of Uruguay to promote internationalization of NCSU research, extension, and education and strengthen cross-cultural services and programs.

South Africa

University of KwaZulu Natal

• From January - June 2010, I was on a sabbatical study leave at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. I worked with with Dr. Isa Bertling and the UKZN Center for Microcopy. We developed a protocol that will help determine when Eucalyptus nitens meristems undergo the change from vegetative to reproductive growth. We hope to use a similar protocol to determine when buds undergo similar changes in our primocane-fruiting raspberry germplasm. I also taught several lectures in the Deciduous Fruit Crop Production course to fourth year undergraduate students. With the help of personnel from the KZN Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development, I toured strawberry, blueberry, blackberry and raspberry grower operations throughout the beautiful and diverse country.
