Wearing Gloves in Public Areas

It is common laboratory practice to wear latex or nitrile gloves to protect the hands from exposure to chemicals. In order to avoid chemical contamination of door knobs, elevator call buttons, telephone receivers, computer keyboards/mouse, etc. by gloves which have been used in a laboratory environment, it is Chemistry Department policy that gloves should not be worn in public areas such as the elevators, restrooms, mail room, stockroom, NMR laboratories, Business Office, faculty office, graduate/post doc office, classrooms, Weatherspoon lounge, etc. In the interest of everyone’s safety, please remove and discard your gloves before entering a public area or before using a telephone, computer, NMR or other laboratory instrument.
