Policy on Use of Chemistry Department Pick-up Truck

  1. The Chemistry Department pick-up truck is for university business only. Use of the truck to haul personal goods constitutes miss use of state property and could result in disciplinary action.

State-owned vehicles shall be used for official state business only. G.S. 14-247 states, “It shall be unlawful for any officer, agent, or employee of the State of North Carolina, or of any county or of any institution or agency of the State, to use for any private purpose whatsoever any motor vehicle of any type or description whatsoever belonging to the State, or to any county, or to any institution or agency of the State.”

  2. The truck driver must be a state employee and hold a valid driver’s license. The driver is responsible for any violations and/or fines while the vehicle is under his or her control. All drivers must have a photocopy of their current driver’s license on file in the Chemistry Shop.

  3. All truck passengers must be on official state business. Normally this means they are an NCSU employee or a visitor to the department. Family members of Chemistry employees are not permitted to drive the truck. Non-state employees may accompany state employees in state vehicles when they have a business interest in the travel. Spouses and children of state employees may accompany them in state-owned vehicles, if ample space is available and all travel is strictly for official state business. For example taking a child to school or picking a child up from school is not permitted, but permitting a child to accompany a state employee on a trip to Chapel Hill to attend a seminar is allowable.

  4. The departmental pick-up truck may be used for delivery/pickup of documents but not for transporting passengers (e.g. picking up a departmental visitor from the air-port). The College of PAMS has a state owned car which should be used for transporting passengers. Call 515-2501 to reserve the PAMS car or use the Oracle calendar to reserve the car (resource pams_cox_car). Keys to the PAMS car are available in the PAMS Dean’s Office.

  5. Usage of the Chemistry pick-up truck outside of normal business hours (8AM - 5PM, weekdays) is not normally allowed.

  6. Regardless of the vehicle used, every attempt should be made to return both the vehicle and its keys as soon as the trip is completed so as to not inconvenience some else who is waiting to use the vehicle.
