SpacerWalnut Creek Project

Preparation

Guest Speakers
Ed Milligan, Co-Chairman of the Partners for Environmental Justice
Brady Rochford, NCSU Preservice Teacher
Scott Taylor, Botanist

"First Mr. Milligan introduced us to the major problems in the Walnut Creek Wetlands that we were not aware of. In fact many of us were not even aware that there were wetlands so near our homes." (Emily)

"Then Scott and Brady came over and taught us more about water and how the wetlands were in danger. We got to stand up, touch plants, and learn hands on how much water was in our body. They made it very interesting and so everyone got excited." (Rachel)

Brady explained the role of wetlands. She challenged students with the question, "Are you an environmentalist?" By the end of the project all students had contributed positively to the restoration and preservation of the environment.
Brady explains a concept
Students illustrate the percentage of water on Earth.
Students demonstrate the percentage of water on the Earth.
Students examine plants to determine the type of environment in which they might thrive.
Scott coaches them to notice characteristics of the plants related to their need for water.
