Walnut Creek is one of many tributaries in the Neuse River watershed. Its origins are in Cary. It crosses the beltline near the intersection of I-440 and US 64. It is dammed to form Lake Johnson and Lake Raleigh. The wetland through which the creek flows is located in downtown Raleigh two miles south of the Civic Center. It is bordered on the west by Hammond Road, on the north by Peterson Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard, on the south and west by I-440. Garner Road, State Street, and Rock Quarry Road run north-south across it.

The creek is a lazy stream most of the time, but becomes a raging river with a large rain. The wetland serves as a filter for water and as a home for many native plants and animals. As a tributary of the Neuse River the creek's waters eventually flow east to the coastal estuaries at New Bern, then into the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
