Akwaaba! Welcome!
We are a group of ten students and three faculty members from the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University. Each year our Forestry Department sponsors a one to two-week international study tour to countries with interesting forestry issues. This year we did something special: we went to Africa. For many of us, it was our first time going to Africa and being exposed to the problems unique to developing countries. We had plenty of opportunities to interact with people from so many backgrounds: village leaders, children, farmers, NGOs, teachers, researchers and people from the timber and tourism industry. We travelled with Angela Ahulu, a Fisheries student from the University of Ghana, for the last ten days. Our accommodations were as diverse as the people we met: from village homes to wooden houses in the middle of the forest to a posh beach resort (strategically timed on the last night of our trip). As diverse as out trip was, we saw a common thread throughout the trip. Long term forest management has to take into account the communities that depend on it. We noticed this across different aspects of forest management such as reforestation, certification, conservation and utilization, and it was true no matter who was involved. We hope by browsing through our website, you can also share our experience. We thank Dr. Erin Sills for organizing and leading us to Ghana and back, Galaxy Tours for their warm and professional tour operators, and the financial support from the NCSU Department of Forestry. Without them, this memorable trip would not be possible.
