2007 ASCFG Dried Cut Flower of the Year
With a name like ‘Hot Biscuits’, it has to be good. This distinctive cut flower has tall, very large plumes of densely packed tiny golden brown flowers. When asked about ‘Hot Biscuits’, Jeriann Sabin exclaimed about the luminous color and size of the flower heads. The heads are so large that support should be provided. Some growers prefer smaller stems, which can be produced by pinching plants when young or by cutting the main spike early and harvesting the laterals. This plant is seed propagated, and as with many amaranthus, preferably direct seeded. One unfortunate characteristic mentioned by several growers is that it is loved by flea beetles. While voted as the ASCFG Dried Cut Flower of the Year, it can also be used fresh. For both dried and fresh use, harvest after plumes are well developed but before seed matures. Waiting too late will allow the seeds to mature, which then shatter during handling.
