1999 ASCFG Fresh Cut Flower of the Year
The 1999 Fresh Cut Flower of the Year is Zinnia 'Benary's Giant' from Ernst Benary of America. Zinnia 'Benary's Giant' comes in a wide range of colors include white, red, purple, yellow and numerous shades in between. Unlike many zinnia cultivars, 'Benary's Giant' plants are productive the entire season in most areas of the country. Growers in the southern states may want to make a second planting in the July for late summer and fall harvest. The plants are vigorous and more mildew resistant than most other zinnias. Stems average 16-30 inches long; the first flower or two may be short and should be removed. While zinnias as a group are not known to be excellent shippers, 'Benary's Giant' flowers have a long vase life and retain their superb colors well.
