2002 ASCFG Fresh Cut Flower of the Year
The ASCFG Fresh Cut Flower of the Year 2002 is Eustoma grandiflorum (lisianthus) Echo series from Sakata Seed. This early-flowering series features double flowers, strong stems and excellent uniformity. Currently nine colors and one mix are available. Lisianthus is a popular greenhouse and field cut flower due to its elegant flower form. In the greenhouse it can be grown year round. In the field, lisianthus should be planted in early spring. Production of transplants from seed can be lengthy; it may be best for new growers to purchase plugs from an established plug producer. In addition, plants are susceptible to root and crown rot and thrips damage can be visible on the darker colors. Eustoma is technically a perennial in cold hardiness Zones 8 to 10, but is generally treated as an annual. Lisianthus is a North American native plant and can be seen in the wild in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Efficient greenhouse production requires exact conditions; references should be consulted to assist in crop scheduling. In the field raised beds or well drained soils are highly recommended.
Best results in harvesting occur when the central bud is removed because there is often a long time between opening of the first and second flowers. Harvest the stems when at least one flower is fully colored but not necessarily fully open. Postharvest life is generally 10 15 days. Small buds often fail to develop after harvesting, and may not fully color in the vase. Preservatives are effective in lengthening postharvest life and should be used.
