Dianthus caryophyllus 'Floristan'

Trial: Annual

Years Trialed: 1998

Good Qualities:

Germination easy and quick; Fast growing; Great vaselife; 96% germination; Plants look great going into the winter; Strong, healthy plant

Problems:

Never bloomed (3); Five to six inches tall; Stayed green and lush all summer- got five blooms total by October 1st; In two months grew only three inches; Lost 20% to crown rot during growing season; Rosetted; Small flowers; Very few flowers

Comments:

Hopefully this plant will prove its worth next year as a second year perennial; Cold weather crops are hard to grow in our area; We finally worked them under down because we couldn't justify keeping the weeds out any longer. They had to cope with entirely too much rain and too little sunshine; Has far more promise than 'Miss Biwako' and 'Miss Kobe' from two years ago; We had hoped for blooms when the weather cooled off this fall but to no avail; First year perennial, shows good potential for next year.
