Matthiola 'Goldcut Rosy Red'

Trial: Annual

Years Trialed: 1997

Good Qualities:

Excellent solid color, good stem length; Beautiful color. Nice quality. Great color (3); The doubles are a great, sweetly scented cut-Very nice for early sales; Good stem length; One of the best stocks I've raises for length of blossom.

Problems:

No problems other than not enough profit from the row. Needs denser planting. As with any stock, there was only a single stem. Also, it would be helpful to be able to cull single flowers from the batch-They're too weak and seem to need more nutrition to thrive; Most plants didn't bloom, those that did were short and had many aborted buds; Poor germination on this cultivar.

Comments:

Possible use as potpourri. Don't normally branch on their own, should try pinching next year. Because we didn't select and remove singles, we had a large amount of single stems--will watch for this in the future. Possible use as potpourri.
