Matthiola 'Mid Cheerful Yellow'

Trial: Annual

Years Trialed: 2000

Good Qualities:

Similar to white, good stem length, good growth under our delay in transplanting stress. Nice fragrance, nice color, nice double flowers, unusual in our market.

Problems:

No good qualities; Did not recover in the field after transplanting; like many stocks we have tried, not economical as a field cut (Zone 2); This is the wrong plant for the South (Zone 7a); I’ve grown Cheerful White and Yellow for years and they have always done very well; This one is supposed to be later, and it is, but we get too hot; What a disappointment!; Needs staking, short flower heads.

Comments:

Similar to Cheerful Yellow or Cheerful White; Bring back good old regular Cheerful!; Forget about 'Mid'; Both stocks were lovely - but do not field grow well for us and not worth taking up greenhouse space to grow again - can’t get price per stem necessary to keep as greenhouse crop.
