I came into college with practically no idea or direction of what I wanted to do. I heard about the Anni Albers Scholars Program and transferred into it my sophomore year. I love the technicality and business aspect of textiles, but crave the creativity and expression of design. It gives my college career an overall focus of fabric and offers a wide range of knowledge that doesn’t leave me feeling like I would have only one career or specialty option after college. I am also pursuing a minor in Industrial Design. I work in the University Theatre as a technician during the school year. I studied in Prague, Czech Republic in Spring 2011. I worked in NYC for Richloom Fabrics Inc. as an intern designing woven home furniture fabrics in Summer 2011. My interests include: theatre, costuming, fashion, color theory, sculpting, fabric pattern design, beading, dying (hair and fabric), special effects makeup, fire spinning, and hooping.

As an Anni Albers Scholar I will be able to pursue my creative interests and skills in the arts as well as a more technical education in textiles. I have always enjoyed creating art of various mediums, especially drawings. I am the recipient of the Prestige Scholarship. Study abroad is one of the opportunities I am looking forward to in my upcoming years at NC State. Since the age of seven I have been a dedicated equestrian and I am now a new member of the NCSU Wolfpack Dressage Team. In my free time I enjoy reading, photography, hanging out with friends and going on adventures!

I have loved to sew since my grandmother taught me as a little kid. I began quilting and later moved on to making clothes and creating leather purses. My designs tend to have very southern roots, but there is also a bit of vintage bohemian woven in. My art is always changing, and I love to work with different materials. I was fortunate two summers ago to work as an intern at a furnace where I learned to pour and create metal sculpture. I have also dappled in woodworking and jewelry making. I feel that the Anni Albers Scholars program will allow to me to carry on family traditions while still making a successful career out of fiber arts. Anni Albers has been a wonderful experience so far, and I am honored to be part of the program.

After graduation, I worked as a textile designer for Microfibres in Winston Salem for a year before heading off to the San Francisco Bay Area where I worked for two different apparel companies, creating textile designs for women’s apparel. My first job in California was at Karen Neuburger, where I created designs for sleepwear. Then I worked for Mervyns, a local department store. After living in California for four years, I decided to move back to NC with my husband and return to NC State’s College of Design to pursue a Masters in Art and Design, focusing my textile design experience on apparel design. I enjoy working with printed textiles and have been exploring a wide variety of surface design techniques while honing my pattern making and sewing skills.

Through my studies as an Anni Albers scholar I became fully prepared for the multidisciplinary field of textiles. While following my instincts for designing with cloth and appreciation for the logistical aspect of how to produce a fashion event, I teamed with NC State’s Art to Wear fashion show as a team member, designer, co-director, and director. I also studied clothing construction and photography in Hawaii through the National Student Exchange Program and traveled to Italy for a Summer Abroad focusing on fashion merchandising. Another summer I lived in NYC and apprenticed with fashion designers, Anna Sui and James Coviello, earning college credit. The Anni Albers Program provides a realistic approach to how you can apply your textile knowledge into the working world. After graduation I’ve enjoyed working in the theatrical arts, constructing costumes for Broadway’s Spiderman:Turn off the Dark, as well as Design Assistant for Betsey Johnson. I continue to appreciate my textile background while working towards Visual Assistant at Urban Outfitters and aspire to continue my education for an MFA at UT in costume construction.
