Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture Kofi Boone served on an American Institute of Architects Urban Design Assistance Team (AIA R/UDAT) in Pratt City, Alabama in October 2011. Professor Boone was asked to provide ecological systems and environmental justice support for Pratt City, a community in Birmingham, which received national attention due to devastation caused by tornadoes in spring of 2011.

Birmingham mayor, the Honorable William A. Bell, Sr. decided to coordinate the community’s reconstruction with the outcomes of the AIA R/UDAT effort. A multidisciplinary team of design professionals, community capacity specialists, economic, health, and housing analysts worked with Pratt City stakeholders and the City of Birmingham staff to create redevelopment concepts that can augment ongoing efforts. The team also included faculty and students from Auburn University’s Urban Studio, as well as Tuskegee University.
