Dixon’s first solo exhibit opened its doors in November 2009 in London’s Kessel Kramer Gallery: KKOutlet. She has acted as Design Director with the LAB at Rockwell Group for installations featured at ’08 Venice Architecture Biennale and ’10 01SJ Biennial.

Hello everyone!

We hope you are having a great summer thus far. The summer months are flying by with only a few weeks till the fall semester begins anew on campus.

Here are a few updates on what we’ve been up to this summer.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes getting our communications technology set up to streamline our outreach efforts. Along with the new technology will come a new look and feel to create an engaging experience across all our communication platforms.

What is there to look forward to?

#1) Brand Opening: Carol Nix, our brand director and associate professor of the practice, has been hard at work getting several projects wrapped up based on her student’s work from CODE | Studio (fall 2011/spring 2012). The new brand will be unveiled and launched at the Back-to-School BBQ sponsored by the Design Guild in August. (BBQ date 8/24/2012.)

#2) New College of Design website: We’re in the implementation stages of a new website for the College that incorporates the new brand along with a lot of new features. As we look to the future of computing and the web, it will follow the principles of responsive design and be mobile/tablet friendly. We’re working towards a soft launch this November and we’ll continue to work till the site is fully launched.

#3) Introducing the new Designlife family: We’re re-working Designlife (our online resource for news, features, and information about what’s going on at the College of Design) with a new e-newsletter, website and print magazine. Yes, we’ve renamed Design Influence (item #6 below) to Designlife. We’re starting fresh, so this is your chance and ours to be a part of something special. Subscribe to our Designlife e-newsletter at: http://eepurl.com/nTjmL or send us your contact information to receive a copy of the magazine coming this fall/winter.

#4) Social Media galore: We’ve launched an Instagram feed, Pinterest page and much more. You can find us online through Vimeo, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Flickr or follow our Designlife RSS feed. Want to find us? Search for keyword(s) #NCStateDesign, #ncsucod or #ncsudesign. Get connected.

#5) Many new stories and features will be posted soon to Designlife. There has been a lot going on this summer with our students, faculty and alumni. First place winners, competition finalists, new projects covered by local media and much more… way more than one person can cover so I am teaming up with guest bloggers/contributors. Stay tuned for the August issue of the e-newsletter — it is in the works.

#6) Spring/Summer 2012 issue of Design Influence magazine will be coming to your mailbox soon if you are signed up to receive it. If you are not, let us know and we can send you a copy. Email design@ncsu.edu with your contact information. Note, this will be the last issue of Design Influence but stay tuned for Designlife magazine coming this fall/winter!

There are a few other things we’ve been up to as well but this update is long enough. Stay cool everyone and enjoy the rest of the summer. We cannot wait for you to see what we have in store.

(July 17, 2012) – The John Rex Endowment announces the approval of three healthy weight grants totaling more than $525,000. The Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education, the North Carolina State University Natural Learning Initiative, and WakeMed Health and Hospitals will receive grants for projects that include overweight and obesity prevention strategies focused on policy and environment changes, long-lasting preventive benefits, and wide public impact.

The Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education will receive $36,874 for a 12-month project to make necessary repairs and improvements and increase the availability and accessibility of the PlayWELL Park.

The Natural Learning Initiative, an outreach unit of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, has been awarded $423,740 for a three-year project that will address the obesity epidemic in young children attending child care by creating a multidisciplinary intervention to transform child care outdoor learning environments (OLEs) into active, productive best practice demonstrations sites.

WakeMed Health & Hospitals will receive $66,798 that will be administered to Advocates for Health in Action for a one-year project to assess the need and create a plan to improve access to healthy foods in Wake County child care facilities. Advocates for Health in Action will also explore ways to provide an affordable, convenient way for low-income families to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables.

“Children’s activity levels and eating habits are heavily influenced by factors beyond their control,” said Kevin Cain, president and CEO of the John Rex Endowment. “Our investment in various healthy weight projects with specific strategies is founded in the understanding that there is no one single solution to the complex problem of childhood overweight and obesity.”

The John Rex Endowment has invested more than $6 million in the healthy weight of children and youth in Wake County. Grant support has been provided for innovative projects to create environments that encourage healthy choices, improve access to nutritious foods and increase opportunities for physical activity.
This extensive scholarship will pay for full tuition, room, board, books, and fees.

Souder, along with five other students around the country attending universities with home furnishings programs, was notified of her selection late last month. She is a rising junior at NC State, majoring in Industrial Design.

The Celia Moh Scholarship was established in October 2001 by furniture industry entrepreneur Laurence Moh to honor his wife, Celia. The scholarship program, funded by Mr. Moh’s initial gift of $3 million, was established to provide full tuition scholarships for students whose academic endeavors would logically lead to careers in the home furnishings industry.

The application process requires candidates to complete an extensive questionnaire, write a personal essay, obtain instructors’ recommendations, and provide a college transcript illustrating exceptional academic achievement. A scholarship committee comprised of notable home furnishings industry executives selected Souder and the other students. The six scholarship recipients join three returning students selected as Celia Moh scholars in previous years. Seventy-three full scholarships have been awarded in the program’s eleven-year existence.

While at NC State, Souder has been on the Dean’s List every semester and Honors Program at North Carolina State. She recently ran her first half-marathon and enjoys snowboarding and rock climbing. Upon graduation, Danielle would like to design products that empower individuals living with disabilities, medical conditions and reduced strength due to aging. Her parents are Mary and Kevin Souder of Charlotte, NC.
