Laser Cutter Reservations (BookingPOINT)

The College of Design has three Universal Laser System laser cutters available in Leazar Hall 220A, next to the Materials Lab. The laser cutters are available for College of Design students, faculty and staff only. Laser cutters provide precise cutting and engraving on a variety of materials.

Users must attend a Laser Cutter Certification Session before they are given access to use the laser cutters. Certification sessions will introduce users to the safe and efficient operation of the laser cutters. Use the College of Design ClassMate System to sign up for a certification session. A link to the ClassMate system and instructions are on the right side of this page. Certification sessions take place at different times throughout each semester in the laser cutter room, Leazar Hall 220A, next to the Materials Lab.

College of Design Laser Cutter Reservations are now created using the DesignLaserSchedule (DLS) System, which is based upon the DesignCheckout system, used to reserve all other items from the IT Lab.

Reserving Laser Cutters at the College of Design is now online and able to be accessed by any web browser. There is no need to download additional software. You will first need to log in to DesignLaserSchedule (DLS). (Return to this window to follow the instructions.)

When you launch DLS, you will see the following page. You may want to bookmark that page.

DesignCheckout Log-in Screen

Log in with your Unity ID and password. If you receive any error message when attempting to log in, please contact the College of Design IT Staff at design_help@ncsu.edu.

Once you have successfully logged in, you will be taken to a page that lists BookingPOINT_Main. Click on this link to use DLS.

DesignCheckout Database Selection Screen

You will now see the Usage Agreement page. Clicking Agree signifies you agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions.

DesignCheckout Loan Agreement Page

When you have agreed to the Usage Agreement, you will see the master list of available lasercutters.

DesignCheckout Resources Screen

As you can see in the above example, if someone else has reserved an item, it will appear as a pink shaded box. You will also notice in the above example a gray shaded area for Monday, September 6. Gray areas denote times when the lab is closed. Laser cutters normally are available 24/7. There will be times when the University is closed and they may not be available.

By default, you are shown the week view. Laser cutters can be reserved for only two-hour time slots, so click the Day View tab at the top of the page and you will see when one is available.

DesignCheckout Day View

Once you have located your resource and are ready to reserve the item, click on any green shaded area for the item and you will be presented with the reservation screen. Don’t worry if the time isn’t exactly what you want. You can adjust that on the reservation screen.

DesignCheckout Reservation Screen

On the above screen, you can fine tune the amount of time you want to reserve the item. In the above example, we have chosen Lasercutter 02 and have set a reservation time of 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for September 7, 2010. To adjust the date, click on the calendar icon beside each date. (Note: The system uses an international date scheme, listing the day in date/month/year order.)

To adjust the times for your reservation, click on the drop down box for pickup and return times.

NOTE – THE LASERCUTTERS CAN ONLY BE RESERVED IN TWO HOUR, NON-CONSECUTIVE INCREMENTS. Please be considerate of other users and spread your time slots over several days if you need more than two hours. Please do not create recurring reservations.

Once you have your reservation time set, click Save. You will be returned to your resource list.

DesignCheckout Save Reservations Screen

You will now notice that your reservation is shown in blue. This means your reservation is created, but not saved.

IMPORTANT – In order to book your reservation, you MUST click the Save Reservations button in the bottom right corner. If you don’t, you will lose your reservation. Make sure to click the Save Reservations button after each reservation you make.

Your reservation will now appear in red. For the Lasercutters, go to 220A Leazar Hall at the beginning time of your reservation. If you reserved other equipment, you will need to come to the checkout desk in 203 Brooks Hall to pick up your equipment.

IMPORTANT: You will need to work with the lab attendant on duty to finish your reservation and make sure all of the equipment and accessories you need are available. There will be times when a reserved item may not be available due to circumstances beyond the control of the IT Lab or the lab attendant on duty. The lab attendant will do his or her best to accommodate your reservation.

Reservations are held for 15 minutes past the beginning time. If you do not show up on time, someone else may take your time slot.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the College of Design IT Staff at design_help@ncsu.edu.
