I. Graduate Students: Students interested in potential graduate research assistantships in our laboratory are encouraged to contact us regarding openings in ongoing or developing projects. We generally only accept students for projects that are currently funded or have a high likelihood of receiving funding; it is unusual for someone to be granted admission to our laboratory on a teaching assistantship and not associated with a specific project. However, in certain circumstances we are willing to work with students who have their own ideas and who are interested in exploring and developing their own funding opportunities.
Our research ranges from very theoretical to very applied, though we tend to work at the interface of the two. We have (and have had) students working on a wide variety of species, systems, and issues, so opportunities for graduate research can range from coastal to mountain systems and from applied fisheries management to ecological theory or conservation.
There is considerable competition for available graduate positions in our lab. Applying students should have a minimum 3.0 GPA. In most cases successful students have much higher GPAs (3.5), high GRE scores (1100-1300), and applicable work experience (field, lab, writing, etc.).
II. Undergraduates: We work hard to keep undergraduate researchers actively involved in our projects. Ideally, we like to have undergraduates around long enough to become actively involved in the project they are associated with, and opportunities may exist to develop independent research projects for experience or credit.
Any paid positions will require formal application through the NCSU Human Resources website and all available positions will be posted there. Positions may also be available for course credit or on a short-term voluntary basis to develop work experience. Undergraduate students interested in working in our lab should contact us about available opportunities, particularly during spring and summer. |
