Registration form for high school students, Young Scholars program

The Young Scholars program places students where the action is-- a working engineering laboratory. This a unique oportunity for hands-on college experience while still in high school. Applicants from Center partnership schools must be completing either their sophomore or junior year in high school. During this summer experience, Young Scholars will work in FREEDM Systems Center research laboratories, participate in career and college exploration activities, and experience field trips or tours. Students will earn additional funds by developing and submitting a project to the International Science and Engineering Fair or the equivalent. Before filling out our online application form, please make sure you know the mathematics, science, and technology classes you plan to take in the fall. Also, please make sure you have answers to the following questions ready:

A statement of why you wish to participate in Young Scholars
Explain what makes you the best candidate for FREEDM Young Scholars. Describe a favorite activity, lab or project you completed during this school year that relates to science, mathematics, engineering, or technology. Give an example of working in a group during this school year: how did you contribute to the group and how was it successful and/or frustrating. What fields of engineering, science, mathematics, or technology are you interested in and why? (250 words).

Online applications are being accepted until March 30, 2012.

Feel free to preview the application. Once you have everything ready, data entry and online submission will take you only about 15 minutes. You should plan to begin and complete the application submission process at one time. If you exit the system before clicking "Submit Application," all data will be lost.

Additional materials are required as part of the application process. Please send these additional items to your local site coordinator once you complete the online portion of the application. Be sure to check your email frequently as we will use this to send notifications.

  • Parent/Guardian certification form
    You may download this permission form for parents or guardians to print and sign.
  • Endorsement from your teacher or counselor or principal
    This letter is to ensure administrative support for your participation. You may ask your mathematics, science, or technology teacher to sign, your counselor, or your principal. You may download this endorsement form to print and sign.
  • In addition, you may be asked to provide a transcript or copy of report card by your local site office.
