#01 - Accessing Programs & Printing Files in the Folder “ECI 714”

ECI 714:
ECI 714 has some files and programs available only to our class. In order to access the files you must login to the AppleShare server, since the files reside on the server and not on the hard drives of the computers in the PowerMac lab. You can login when you first sit down at the PowerMac, or any time while you are using the computer.
1. Using the mouse, click and hold the mouse down on the small apple in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Drag down the menu options until you highlight the selection Chooser, and let go. A screen similar to the following should appear:



2. In the Chooser dialog box, click on AppleShare icon in the upper left hand corner of the dialog box (it will darken).
- Under Select a Server click on AppleShare Server (it will darken).

3. A second dialog box should appear - Connect to AppleShare Server as:


- Click on the radio button beside Registered user.
- At the Name: prompt enter the name eci714 <--NOTE: there are no spaces!!

Do not enter a password, just click on OK.

In the next dialog box, highlight the volume AppleShare Server, then click OK.


4. Close the Chooser dialog box by clicking on the close box in its upper left hand corner.

5. If you can see the desktop, the AppleShare Server icon should now be on it. (Depending upon what your were doing, the desktop may not be visible to you).
- double-click quickly on the AppleShare Server icon to open it. Remember to click on the icon and not on the name.
- double-click quickly on the ECI 714 file folder icon to open it. You should see something similar to the following:


Inside the folder Class Handouts F98 I will put handouts for you to print out. The other file folders contain other class materials. Double-click quickly on a folder to open it. Double-clicking quickly on a icon open the file and launch the program that created the file.


To Select a Printer in the Poe 422 Lab:
Since Poe Hall is networked, you must check the print path so that any documents that you print will be routed to the Poe 422 computer lab. If you do not choose the correct printer, your document could be printed out in someone’s office somewhere in the building!!! PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CHECK THE PRINT PATH BEFORE YOU PRINT ANY DOCUMENT. When you choose PRINT under the File menu, you should see a printer with the room number 422 imbedded in the name (e.g. LAB422IWPRO810). If you do not, please follow the directions below for setting the print path.

To set the print path: using the mouse, click and hold the mouse down on the small apple in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Drag down the menu options until you highlight the selection Chooser, and let go. The same Chooser screen should appear as in the first section of this document “To Access Files and Programs in the Folder ECI 714”.
- click on Laserwriter 8 in the upper left hand corner of the Chooser dialog box.
- In the box “Select a PostScript printer ” click on a printer in Poe 422 such as: LAB422lWPRO810

click on Setup
-
click on Autosetup. When the Autosetup is finished, click on OK.

close the Chooser dialog box by clicking on its close box.


To Print a File in the Class Handouts Folder:
1. Access the Class Handouts folder as described above in the first section of this on the AppleShare Server, inside the ECI 714 folder. You should find three or more files there such as:

2. Drag the file that you want into the 7 day storage folder on your local hard drive.

3. Open the 7 day storage folder, and double click (quickly) on a file icon - for example the Book Review Form. This file was created using ClarisWorks 5.0, therefore, double-clicking on the file will start the program ClarisWorks, and open the file. You should see a screen similar to the following:



4. At the top of the document you should see something similar to:
Your name, ECI 714 - Book Review Form
You have accessed the Header of the document. Click to the right of the words “Yourname,” and press the delete key to remove the phrase. Type your name. Once your name is here when you print the file out you can identify your printout in Poe 422 where the printers are located.

5. In the menu bar, click on the word File, and drag down until you highlight the word Print, then let go.
- In the Print dialog box check to make sure that the printer you are about to print on is located in the Poe 422 lab. For example the printer called Lab422LWPRO810. If it is not, click cancel!! You will need to select your printer through the Chooser as described in the section above titled To Select a Printer in the Poe 422 Lab.”.

6. Pick up your printout in the room between the PowerMac labs (Poe 422).
- If you are printing DURING CLASS TIME, sign your name in the “Charge” binder and charge the printing to ECI 714.
- If you are printing OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME, sign your name in the “Cash” binder and pay $.05 a page to the lab assistant.

7. After picking up your printout, return to the computer. The document should still be on the screen. Select Quit under the File menu option. Do not attempt to save the document, just quit.


To Save Paper When Printing in the Poe Labs
In order to save paper when you print in Poe Hall, you can choose to have two pages text printed per sheet of paper. Before you print, under the File Menu choose Page Setup. In the Page Setup dialogue box, the option is probably set for 1-Up with a vertical orientation (81/2” by 11” - height taller than width). You can click and choose either 2-Up, or 4-Up which will print two or four pages on each sheet respectfully. 2-Up will print your document in an 11” by 81/2” orientation (landscape - width wider than height).


To Start-up (Launch) Mac Software:
Software on the AppleShare Server, or on the Hard Drive:

To start-up or launch Mac software, double-click quickly on the program icon. If the program is inside a folder you will need to open the folder first by double clicking.

Software on One or More 3 1/2" Disks, or on CD ROM :
If the software resides on one 3 1/2" disk, you will first need to insert the program disk in the drive, then click on the disk's icon to open it up and see what files are on it. Next double-click quickly on the program icon. Some instructional Mac software is on more that one disk. To use most of this software (or some CD ROM software) we will need to request that it be installed in our ECI 714 folder.

*** If you get “stuck” in a program, try pressing the following keys to break out
- esc
- hold down the Command key and press the period key
- hold down the Command key and press Q

To End a Session on the PowerMac:
Quitting the application by selecting Quit under the File menu. Drag the AppleShare Server icon into the Trash Can.
**** DO NOT leave any of our folders or files on the desktop!

MAKE SURE THAT YOU QUIT ALL APPLICATIONS BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE DAY

Make sure that you drag the AppleShare server into the trashcan
before you leave for the day.

If you insert a diskette or CD in the drive,
click and drag it into the trashcan before you leave.
