CYBERSPACE CRANES - A SYMBOL FOR "WORLD PEACE"

Are you a dreamer for world peace? Do you make paper cranes in hopes that one day there will be peace around the world, in your school, community, and state? If so, this project if for you, your school, classmates, friends, and family.

Sadako, the dreamer whose legacy we must keep alive, continued to hold on to dear life for as long as she could. She believed that there was happiness in the world and that it belonged to everyone. Like her, we can help fill this world with happiness and excitement through the sharing of our book reviews in her memory. Don't pass up this opportunity to fulfill the dream of a life time. You can make a difference by participating in this project.

Step 1 - Read "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr

Step 2 - In her memory share a favorite book from your school media center or classroom with the 5th grade students at Winding Springs Elementary School. (We will copy all reviews, bind them together in one volume and title it "one-Thousand Reasons for World Peace" in Cyberspace)

Step 3 - A copy will be sent to you upon request, if you agree to pay postage and/or shipping.

Step 4 - Tell why this book review was chosen as a symbol for "world peace"

  4. Students will search on-line databases for the following information:
    Atomic Bomb
    Eleanor Coerr
    Hiroshima, Japan
    Holidays and Customs
    Japan
    Japanese Kimonos

Based on the number of students in the class, the students figures that each one, including the teacher, would have to make thirty-five cranes plus twenty more, to reach their goal of one-thousand paper cranes to display in the media center. (Can you help by sending a crane?)
  7. Students will begin the construction of a book complied from reviews submitted by children from around the world.
  8. Students will hold a Japanese Festival in February to culminate this activity and to present their findings to the school.
