Berube to Study Public Understanding of Nanotechnology
Dr. David Berube, professor of communication, has received a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to determine how the public absorbs scientific information on nanotechnology and other technical issues. Read more.
Bigelow to Examine Peaceful Resolution to Religious Conflict
Dr. Anna Bigelow, assistant professor of religious studies, has been awarded a $99,500 fellowship by the Carnegie Scholars Program to consider how Muslims and non-Muslims are able to live together peacefully in many parts of the world. The Carnegie Scholars Program was established in 1999 to provide financial and intellectual support to writers, analysts and thinkers addressing some of the most critical research questions of our time. Brewer to Explore History of Slavery as Part of Humanities Award
Dr. Holly Brewer, associate professor of history, has earned an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Brewer plans to use the summer stipend to trace the cultural, legal, and institutional history of slavery as it emerged in 17th century Virginia and in the British Empire.
Nassar-McMillan Receives Counselor Education Award
Dr. Sylvia Nassar-McMillan, associate professor in counselor education, received the Association for Counselor Education's Publication in Counselor Education and Supervision Award on March 29. The award honors a significant publishing effort by an association member that focuses on the education and supervision of counselors. Read more.
Ponder Appointed Special Advisor to State Education Sub-Committee
Dr. Gerald Ponder, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Education, has been appointed a Special Advisor to the 21st Century Professionals sub-committee of the State Board of Education. The 21st Century Professionals committee has primary responsibility for licensure, personnel evaluation, special award, and professional development issues for teachers, administrators, and other school personnel for North Carolina public schools. Carter Honored for Article on Writing
Dr. Mike Carter, professor of English, won the Richard Braddock Award for his article, "Ways of Knowing, Doing, and Writing in the Disciplines," which was published in the journal College Composition and Communication. The award is given annually for an outstanding article on writing or the teaching of writing in the journal by the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

Sanoff Presents Lecture at Urban Development Seminar
Henry Sanoff, professor emeritus of architecture, presented "Participatory Methods for the Design Community" in Santiago, Chile on March 25 at a seminar on international experiences of citizen participation in urban development.
