'Smart' Commuting Could Save Gas, Reap Other Rewards

The Smart Commute Challenge is an annual non-profit public service campaign that works to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the Triangle. Taking the challenge is as simple as making an online pledge to carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, ride the bus, or work from home at least once before May 30.
All challenge participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of several prizes, including a free vacation for two anywhere in the continental United States. For more information, or to register, visit the Smart Commute Challenge Web site.
Step Into Better Health with Million Step March
The North Carolina State Health Plan is encouraging North Carolinians to make a commitment to an active, healthy lifestyle one step at a time through the Million Step March, a 600-mile statewide wellness campaign.
Interested participants may create an account on the event Web site, and record their physical activity online. In addition to getting fit, participants will be eligible for weekly prizes. The Web site also features a host of exercise, fitness and nutrition tips.
The campaign runs through mid-June and concludes with a celebration event in Wilmington. Other events are scheduled throughout May and June.
