What is Southern District ITE?

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) was established in 1930 to combine efforts of transportation engineers in traffic control. ITE is a national organization composed of several districts. Within these districts are sections identified mostly by state.

The Southern District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers is comprised of eight sections. These sections include the Alabama, Deep South, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia sections. The Deep South section includes Mississippi and Louisiana.

Southern District ITE also encompasses student chapters. The chapters included in Southern District are Auburn University, Clemson University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Technical University, Mississippi State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, Southern Polytechnic State University, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Memphis, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Yearly-elected officers of Southern District ITE include a president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer. A nominations committee selects a slate of officers to be elected for the following year. The nominations committee is chaired by the immediate past president and consists of one appointed representative from each section.

Southern District ITE officers conduct an annual meeting that changes location every year. The District Annual Meeting involves an audit of the prior year’s financial records, presentation of new officers, professional development sessions, technical programs and presentation of awards.

Awards presented at the district’s annual meeting include Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service, Marble J. Hensley Outstanding Individual Activity, Joseph M. Thomas Outstanding Young Member, Outstanding Section Award, Best Technical Committee Report, Outstanding Student Chapter, Best Technical Paper, and Best Student Paper awards.

Several committees are selected to aid in accomplishing the objectives of Southern District ITE each year. These committees include Annual Meeting Local Arrangements, Annual Meeting Statistics, Audit, Awards, Career Guidance, Education and Student Chapters, Historical Records, Membership, Nominations, Professional Development, Publications and Public Relations, Technical Council, Tellers' Committee, and Site Selection.

The publications and public relations committee of Southern District ITE publish a yearbook and two newsletters every year. Officers of Southern District ITE as well as section officers and other current information can be obtained through these publications.
