About the Research

In addition to the development and distribution of the measurement tool, the project focuses on educational research exploring the relationship between stereotypes, persistence and performance as well as vocational identity and career commitment.

“Measurement matters” is designed to provide educators with much needed standardized survey questions that capture prevailing contemporary stereotypes and advance theory and research about the psychosocial and educational dynamics of under-representation in STEM fields. This project is a generative initiative directed at fostering and facilitating social research on topics related to gender and ethnic/racial diversity in science. The availability of a reliable and valid standard survey tool will enhance social scientists' ability to document the positive and negative components of prevailing stereotypes, with applications in theory and research about

  • How stereotypes function to promote or discourage persistence and performance in STEM,
  • How (or if) they can be diluted or dismantled through direct and sustained challenge, and
  • How career choices and commitment unfold against the backdrop that stereotypes provide.
