![]() | Improved Infant Formulas using a Neonatal Piglet Model
This work examines the safety and efficacy of supplementing infant formulas
with new fatty acids that are needed to optimize infant growth and development.
Our work utilizes the piglet model. We conducted an experiment to examine the
safety and efficacy of two different sources of AA and DHA fatty acids.
The following website contains a concise description of the work that was
published in several area newspapers and Dr. Odle was interviewed by several
radio talkshows. Our research with the piglet model here at NCSU was instrumental
in convincing the FDA to approve the inclusion of AA and DHA in formulas.
Mead Johnson is now marketing a formula (as of January, 2002) that contains the
