Voices of North Carolina NC Quest Grant Initiative / Partnership
Wake County Public Schools & NC State University ~ Summer, 2007 Fall, 2008
Greetings NC Quest Voices of NC 8th Grade Teachers! Below you will find a list of the formal goals and related objectives we included with our grant proposal which are aimed at providing a quality, sustained language- and literacy-focused professional development experience for 8th grade English language arts and social studies teachers in Wake County using the Voices of North Carolina curriculum.
We hope that you are able to
have fun, play, explore, and experiment with language with your colleagues from across Wake County;
develop a heightened awareness and appreciation of language and its connections to literacy, culture, history, and life in general;
experience a positive shift in your perceptions about language differences;
develop a heightened comfort level with your knowledge of language variation and diversity;
increase your knowledge of North Carolina in terms of language, literacy, history, and culture, and better see where you and your students fit in terms of connections to the state and to these terms;
take a broader approach to language study, especially in terms of working with students about language; e.g., considering audience, purpose, and connections to context as a framework for language choices;
better understand the importance of linking students to the language they bring to the classroom and see ways to use it as a bridge to teaching about language variation, language use, language choices, and Standard English, as well as providing students with experiences that help them make effective language choices based on audience, purpose, context, etc.;
better understand the study of NC Voices as a reading/writing focus situated in language variation, English language arts, and social studies;
make personal, professional, and curricular connections to and see the relevance of your subject matter and this language- and literacy-focused professional development experience.
