3-2.1 TYPES OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Advisers should refer students to the Financial Aid Office for specific information on the following types of assistance:

 1. grants and scholarships - included are Federal Pell Grants, general University grants and scholarships, University "name" scholarships, North Carolina Student Incentive Grants, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants;

 2. long-term loans - included are Federal Perkins Loan/National Direct Student Loans, institutional long-term loans, and Federal Stafford Loans Subsidized and unsubsidized;

 3. Federal Work-Study Program;

 4. need-based scholarships for students with strong grade point averages - Interested students must file the FAFSA, preferably by March 1. Consideration for both departmental need-based scholarships and scholarships not restricted by curriculum will occur automatically if the FAFSA has been filed properly. Departmental offices should be able to provide additional information to their majors. (See Scholarships, Merit);

 5. athletic awards - These awards are made upon the recommendation of the Department of Athletics to students who meet the established qualifications for such awards;

 6. emergency short-term loans - These loans are available in small amounts - usually $100 or less - to enable a full-time degree student to meet unexpected expenses. These loans are not need-based. They generally must be repaid within 30 days and are not extended beyond the last day of classes in the semester or summer sessions. Only students with good repayment records need apply; and

 7. other student employment - Other employment - not need-based - is available on and off campus, and assistance in locating work is available to any student from the posting of employment opportunities on the bulletin board outside the Financial Aid Office.

 Counselors in the Financial Aid Office will often assist students in the area of budgeting and by directing them to other sources for help. One of the functions of the office is to counsel students, parents, and others with respect to problems of financing a college education. Appointments are not necessary. A brochure is available upon request.
