North Carolina State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching

5-2.1 PREREQUISITES

The teacher of a course or section should remind students in writing during the first week of classes of all prerequisites or restrictive statements that apply to that course.

Prerequisites are courses or levels of achievement that a student is expected to have completed successfully prior to enrolling in a course. To be effective for any given semester, prerequisites must have been set forth in the Undergraduate Catalog at the time of registration for that semester. Prerequisites for a given course may be waived by the teacher of that course or section. Restrictive statements for a given course may be waived only by a dean of the college in which the course is taught.

It is the student's responsibility to satisfy prerequisites or obtain from the teacher a written waiver of prerequisites for any course in which the student enrolls. Failure to satisfy prerequisites may result in removal from enrollment in the course.

It is the right of the teacher of a course or section to determine that all students in that course or section have satisfied the prerequisites. Students who have not satisfied the prerequisites for a course may be removed from enrollment in that course by a written request from the teacher, endorsed by the head of the department offering the course and received by the Department of Registration and Records prior to the end of the sixth week of classes in a semester. The Department of Registration and Records will notify the affected students that they have been dropped from the roll of that course or section.
