North Carolina State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching

5-2.5 INDEPENDENT STUDIES

The administration of the correspondence courses program of NC State is through the Office of Independent Studies of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. However, NC State courses retain their separate identity and are governed by the academic regulations of NC State as indicated below. Only NC State courses may be used by suspended students to regain eligibility.

The amount of Independent Studies course credit which can be applied toward a given degree is determined by individual departments and/or colleges. A student enrolled or planning to enroll in an on-campus degree program should check with the appropriate academic department and obtain from the department head or departmental coordinator of advising written approval that the course to be taken through Independent Studies will satisfy degree requirements. Students may take only two Independent Studies courses at one time.

Independent Studies courses are not intended for general use by students currently enrolled full-time in an on-campus degree program. However, such students will be permitted to enroll for or continue an Independent Studies course which they cannot complete before the beginning of a new semester or summer session, provided they obtain the written permission of their college dean. This written permission should be indicated on the Independent Studies Application or sent separately to the office of Independent Studies in Chapel Hill. Graduate credit is not granted for courses taken through Independent Studies.
