North Carolina State University Handbook for Advising and Teaching

THE FIRST-YEAR WRITING REQUIREMENT

Beginning Fall 2003, NC State students will take one four-hour writing course, ENG 101 Academic Writing and Research, in their first year to satisfy the freshman component of the General Education Requirements in Writing and Speaking. Students with lower placement scores will take a two-course freshman sequence, ENG 100 and ENG 101.  Students with exceptionally high placement scores may qualify for exemption. See Placement in Freshman English at  http://social.chass.ncsu.edu/fwp/PlacementGrid.htm.

ENG 100 and 101 must be scheduled every semester until completed satisfactorily. Successful completion requires a grade of C- or better.

For additional information about the new requirement beginning Fall 2003, the interim requirement in effect for the 2003-03 academic year, and other issues pertaining to the Freshman Writing Program, see http://social.chass.ncsu.edu/fwp/index.html.
