8-16 Disability Services for Students
The mission of Disability Services for Students (DSS) at NC State University is to support the ongoing development of an accessible university that embraces and celebrates diversity. DSS pursues this mission by facilitating effective reasonable accommodations for students, educating the campus community, and promoting equal access and opportunity.
Responsibilities of Faculty/Staff Members
Included in the course syllabus, should be a statement about accommodating students with disabilities. Faculty should also make an announcement, at the beginning of the semester, inviting students
with disabilities to schedule an appointment to discuss academic accommodations. (See:
http://www.ncsu.edu/provost/hat/current/appendix/appen_k.html)If Notified in Writing
Faculty/staff members have the responsibility to cooperate with DSS in providing authorized accommodations in a reasonable and timely manner. Faculty/staff should meet with students who provide a letter of request for accommodations to establish the means of providing accommodation.
If Not Notified in Writing
If a student requests accommodation and the faculty/staff member has not been notified of the student's need for accommodation, then the faculty/staff member should refer the student to the DSS office. If the disability is visible and the accommodation appears appropriate, the faculty/staff member should provide
the accommodation while awaiting official notification.
If Questioning Appropriateness of Accommodation
If a faculty/staff member has questions about the appropriateness of certain accommodations, DSS should be contacted for further clarification. The faculty/staff member should continue to provide accommodations while the issue is being resolved.
