Tours and Instruction
· Tours of the D.H. Hill Library are offered by the Research and Information Services Department at the start of each semester, and schedules are posted. Graduate student and faculty tours are also available for departments by appointment. Call 515-2936.
· For assistance with research and information needs, including use of the information system, electronic databases, U.S. or state government documents, patents, or the reference collection, visit the reference desk on the first floor, East Wing, or call Research & Information Services at 515-2935. You may also e-mail your requests for information to: libref@ncsu.edu.
· Computer-based literature searches are provided by Research & Information Services staff for databases not mounted locally on the NCSU Libraries Information System. Several hundred databases covering a wide range of subjects can be searched for a fee, which will vary according to the databases searched, time spent searching, and print costs. Searches are done on a appointment basis. Call Research & Information Services at 515-2935 for details.
Borrowing Privileges
· NC State students, faculty, and staff need their AllCampus Cards to borrow from the NCSU Libraries. The loan period for faculty and graduate students is 90 days; undergraduate loans are generally for 30 days. For circulation information, call Access Services at 515-3364.
· Self-Services include telephone renewal (515-6065); e-mail renewal (library_circulation@ncsu.edu and via the library’s Web page); and automated checkout and renewal stations within the building.
· Through agreements with other agreements with other institutions, NC State faculty, students, and staff are able to borrow materials at other Triangle Research Libraries Network libraries (Duke, NC Central, UNC-Chapel Hill) and Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (Meredith, St. Mary’s, St. Augustine’s, Peace, and Shaw). A UNC privilege card allows NC State faculty to borrow from all 16 constituents institutions of the UNC system. Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Card is available to NC State faculty visiting any of more than 150 academic and research libraries. For more information, ask at the main circulation desk (515-3364).
NCSU Libraries Information System
· The library’s online information system offers access to NCSU Libraries’ catalog (with descriptions of books and journals in our collection, where they are located, and availability for check out), to electronic databases, and to other Internet resources including other library catalogs. Electronic databases contain full-text and images of digitized journals and provide indexes for journal articles in all fields, patents and U.S. government documents, and technical reports in various disciplines. Access is available through office of home computers with modems (515-3980) or Internet connectivity (library.ncsu.edu). Vendor licensing conditions may restrict remote access for some databases to campus IP addresses.
· For those who need to use a computer, the D.H. Hill Library houses a Unity lab on the second floor of the tower for NC State students. The equipment is maintained by Information Technology (515-3035).
Delivery of Material to Users
· The Libraries’ TRIPSaver service enables users to enables users to obtain books and photocopies of articles not owned by NC State students. TRIPSaver provides two-day delivery of requested materials from its fellow Triangle Research Libraries Network members (Duke, NC Central and UNC-Chapel Hill). For information on registering for TRIPSaver, phone 515-7470 or visit the TRIPSaver office, Room 1140, first floor, East Wing. Requests can be submitted by e-mail, Web (http://www/lib/ncsu.edu/libraries/ilc/tripsaver.html), or fax. The NCSU Libraries is also developing an automated documentary delivery system.
· To obtain materials not owned by the library through regular interlibrary loan, visit the Interlibrary Center desk, first floor, East Wing, for request cards. Materials usually arrive in two to three weeks. Call 515-2116.
Library Collections
· To request books, journals, or other information resources that you would like the Libraries to order, fill out an order request form available in the reference area or on the Web (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/libraries/collmgmt/form.html), call the Collection Management Department (515-3833), visit a collection manager (Room 1204, first floor, East Wing), or send e-mail: collection_mgt@ncsu.edu.
· Issues of current magazines and journals in call number order,
as well as current newspapers (foreign and U.S.), are in the Class of 1991
Periodicals Reading Room, first floor, Erdahl-Cloyd Wing. Call 515-2597.
Older issues that have already been bound in hardcover can be found in
the library bookstacks by call number.

· The NCSU Library System has been a federal documents depository since 1924 and receives over 92% if documents published by the U.S. Government Printing Office. It also houses maps and is an official U.S. Patent Depository with a complete collection of U.S. patents from 1790 to date. Call the Research & Information Services Department at 515-2935 for information on government documents.
· To view or listen to audiovisual materials (videotapes, films, CDs, laser disks, and multimedial programs), go to the Media Center, second floor, Erdahl-Cloyd Wing. The Media Center offers more than two dozen individual listening/viewing stations, group viewing rooms, and the 150-seat Erdahl-Cloyd Theater. Staff are available to assist with use of audiovisual equipment, to schedule the Erahl-Cloyd Theater for university -related group presentations sponsored by the faculty of professional staff and to provide trained operators for scheduled presentations. · Special Collections comprises the University Archives, Manuscripts, and Rare Books. University Archives houses the official records of NC State since 1887. Rare Books and Manuscripts include collections with strengths in entomology, architectural history, and NC State’s history. It is located on the ground floor, East Wing. Call 515-2273.
Library Services
· Self-service photocopies are located in the Photocopy Center (first floor, D.H. Hill Library), the Reserve Room, reference area, and in the tower’s fourth-, sixth-, and eighth-floor group study room. Copies cost 6 cents per page with an AllCampus Card for the NC State community. A color copier and a wide-format copier are also available for public use. You can get change at the Photocopy Center or Reserve Room desk. Call 515-2343.
· Instructors make library or personal materials available to all students in a particular course by placing them on reserve. To locate reserve materials, go the Reserve Room, first floor, Erdahl-Cloyd Wing, or call 515-2597. The library is also implementing an electronic reserve system, which will be operational 1997-98.
· The library has 66 locked faculty study rooms in the bookstack towers for the convenience of faculty doing research that requires extensive use of the library materials. They are assigned by the library’s Administrative Office (3136 East Wing), and two or may researchers may be assigned to a study room. Faculty members may share their key with their graduate research assistants, but separate keys will not be issued to research assistants.
· Four graduate study rooms are available on the second through fifth floors of the library, including a computer room on the second floor, now outfitted by the Libraries with 7 PCs connected to the campus network (with Internet access and support for the full Unity environment). All the rooms are kept locked, but any NC State graduate student may check out a key at the circulation desk located at the library entrance for use for a 4-hour period.
· The NCSU Libraries provides a wide range of services, equipment,
and software to meet the needs of NC State students, faculty and staff
who have vision, hearing, and mobility disabilities. The Assistive
Technologies Center (Room 1402 on mezzanine) includes Equipment for the
vision and hearing impaired, as well as mobility assistive devices for
mouse and keyboard use. For information, call 515-2936. You
may obtain a key to the center form the circulation desk at the main entrance.
