Computing Services
Computing Services Computing Consultants (515-HELP)
In cooperation with other computing consultants on campus, Computing Services
consultants provide help with using Unity/Eos and its software applications.
Help with local area networks, microcomputing applications (for Macintosh and
Intel-based computers), supercomputing, multimedia, and the analysis of hardware
and software needs is also available. Most consulting is done by e-mail (help@ncsu.edu)
and phone (515-HELP). Walk-in help is also available in the Information Center,
Room 208, Hillsborough Building, but for complicated problems, making an appointment
to meet with a consultant is recommended.
Computing Services: Online Help
The NC State Help Database is an searchable online database that provides answers
to more than a thousand previously asked questions about computing at
NC State. See the URL: http://www.ncsu.edu/help.
The Help Database is also available after logging in to the Unity system by
typing "help" at the unity prompt. Computing Services has also published many
online tutorials and guides, which may be copied freely for personal or classroom
use. See the URL http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/pub/
Computing Services: Multimedia Services (515-HELP)
Computing Services consultants offer assistance with multimedia for a variety
of formats and computing platforms. A CD-recordable station is available for
producing CD-ROMs in many formats. This service can manage only low volume production,
and must be scheduled in advance. Limited image-scanning services are also available.
Computing Services: Short Courses (515-HELP)
Short computing-related courses are offered free of charge to faculty, staff,
and graduate students during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Courses
topics include Macromedia's Dreamweaver for creating web pages, publishing your
web pages, Corporate Time scheduling software and various popular software packages.
Course schedules and registration information are sent to all faculty and staff.
The schedules are also published at the URL http://www.ncsu.edu/it/education/schedule
Publications (515-1075)
In addition to many online guides and tutorials, Computing Services currently
publishes Prompt, a newsletter about computing at NC State, and Connect, a more
lengthy publication which features articles aimed at helping faculty use computing
resources more effectively in their teaching and research. Both publications
are available on paper and online. The publications and subscription forms
are available online from the Computing Services home page at the URL http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/pub/
Software Site Licenses (515-HELP)
Computing Services negotiates special agreements with various software
manufacturers that enable NC State faculty, staff, and students to obtain
academically oriented software for MS-Windows, Macintosh, and Unix systems
at reduced rates. A list of this software and information about obtaining
copies is available at the URL http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/pub/site-license/sitelic-intro.html.
Hardware Maintenance (515-2016)
The Hardware Services group within Computing Services provides maintenance
and upgrades at competitive rates for selected computer equipment owned
by the University. NC State faculty, staff, and students may also use this
service for hardware purchased from the NCSU Bookstores. See the URL http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/hs/hs_page.html
Distributed Support
Through Computing Services' Distributed Support program, departments may hire
Computing Services consultants to spend a percentage of their time providing
network, workstation, software application, and other expertise directly to
the department.
