UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Each year the University, with the support of the Alumni Association,
recognizes its outstanding teaching assistants who have been nominated
by their departments. The Graduate Student Association sponsors this
annual program for outstanding TA's who are recognized at an awards reception
where they are presented with certificates of merit. Twenty
top students receive a $100 monetary award.
COLLEGE TEACHING ASSISTANT (TA) AWARDS
The following colleges participate in awarding outstanding teaching
assistants:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences makes two $1,000 awards
each year to its most outstanding teaching assistants.
The College of Forest Resources recognizes outstanding teaching through
awards of $500 (one) and $350 (two) to faculty nominated by their respective
departments.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences gives four annual cash
awards to Outstanding Teachers. One of these awards is restricted
to lecturers only.
The College of Veterinary medicine administers four awards pertaining
to teaching and leadership each spring to their outstanding faculty.
The monetary value ranges from $1,000 to $1,500 per award.
UNDERGRADUATE OUTSTANDING TEACHING AWARDS
Faculty who have been teaching five semesters at NC State are eligible for nomination
to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers. Each year, approximately 17 faculty
members are recognized as Outstanding Teachers. All colleges have an Outstanding
Teacher Selection Committee which seeks input from students, faculty, administrators
and alumni. Four of the nominees are selected by student representatives
from the college committees to receive monetary awards of $1,000 each which
is provided by the Office of Alumni Relations.
ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED UNDERGRADUATE PROFESSORSHIPS
Faculty who are members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers are eligible
for nomination for an Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professorship.
Each College Selection Committee submits two nominations to a screening committee
composed of: the Provost, chair of the Faculty; chair of the Academy of Outstanding
Teachers, chair, Evaluation of Teaching Committee; chair, Executive Committee
of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers; Vice Provost, Undergraduate Affairs,
President, Student Body, and the Executive Director & Associate Vice Chancellor
for Alumni Relations. Six Professorships valued at $3,000 per year for
a period of two years are awarded yearly by the Office of Alumni Relations for
outstanding undergraduate teaching.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
The Board of Governors’ Award Program for Excellence in Teaching is established
to recognize sustained excellence in teaching. It is funded by The University
of North Carolina Board of Governors. Selection will be by a process which
identifies a Board of Governors’ nominee from each of the ten degree-granting
colleges and the selection from among these nominees of the Board of Governors’
awardee for the University. The selection process will occur in parallel
with the already-established Outstanding Teacher and Alumni Distinguished Professor
selection processes (which are open to untenured as well as tenured faculty
members). Eligible faculty for the Board of Governors’ Award will have
tenure and will have been teaching at NC State for a least seven years. A monetary
award of $650 provided by the Board of Governors, will accompany the recognition
of each of the ten college awardees, and a monetary award of $7,500 will accompany
the recognition of the University awardee.
