Braille is a tactile reading system that uses embossed dots. The DSO uses Duxbury translation software to emboss course materials into Braille. The DSO also has Power Braille 40 refreshable Braille display unit, Braille-N-Speak note-takers, Type-N-Speak note-takers, and a Blazie Engineering Braille Blazer portable embosser available for checkout for student or departmental use. The DSO will not process any requests for alternate format materials prior to registration in the course. The DSO does not provide alternate format materials for personal use or study (Section 504, 104.44(d)(2)). Responsibilities are as follows.

Instructor

Provide syllabus and any other course materials in electronic format to the DSO at least two weeks before the start of the semester so Braille can be obtained or produced on time.
Since the translation software imports directly from ASCII, Microsoft Word 97 or earlier, Word Perfect 8.0 or earlier, HTML, LaTex, and ICADD, these are the preferred formats.

Student

Obtain the books, copies of syllabi, and course materials well in advance of the start of the semester.
Review materials and obtain additional information from instructor as needed prior to making your request.
Complete an Alternate Format Request Form. The DSO can provide assistance in completing the form.
Provide course materials to the DSO one month prior to the due date. Materials that are particularly difficult to convert, such as Nemeth Code and tactile graphics, may take longer.
The DSO can produce Braille much more efficiently if materials are submitted in electronic format. The translation software imports directly from ASCII, Microsoft Word 97 or earlier, Word Perfect 8.0 or earlier, HTML, LaTex, and ICADD, so these are preferred formats.
When an entire textbook is required for effective access, the DSO attempts to obtain Braille format from organizations or vendors.
